Solarthon Recap
Ordinary People’s participation in Solarthon 2010 was a huge success! On Saturday, July31st, we sent a team of 10 eager representatives of Ordinary People to help low-income families in West Oakland, CA generate clean energy, while also lowering their monthly utility bills. Thanks to all of our donors – we reached our fundraising goal of $5,000! OP’s participation in Solarthon directly resulted in nearly 2kW of solar panels installed. It took our team a full day of hard work out in the sun (8am – 6pm!) to install 6 panels with the help of our trusty Grid Alternatives team leaders:

In total, Bay Area Solarthon 2010 brought over 200 community volunteers, corporate work teams and job trainees together to install 9 solar electric systems in one day. A total of 18 kilowatts were installed, which will generate over $180,000 in clean energy for these families over the next 20-30 years, saving them over 75% on their electricity bills. Over $100,000 was raised!
Lunchtime brought out a number of distinguished guest speakers, including CPUC Commissioner Timothy Simon and Oakland Councilmember Nancy Nadel, as well as the most encouraging speakers – the homeowners receiving the panels.

Thanks again to all who came out and also the Ordinary People community members who donated towards this great cause. We accomplished all sorts of good with this one project – while also having a blast!

We’re looking forward to our next project – we’d love to hear from you on what that might be. What are you passionate about? What can the Ordinary People community do to help make an impact? Any feedback on our first two projects? What can we do better?
